You can sum this match up with one word…Whew! Whew, was it hot out there again today. Whew, did we have to mount a comeback at #1 doubles to win a tiebreaker in the 3rd set. Those two girls haven’t seen the courts since last Tuesday and they started out rusty. Whew, did Piper play well tonight (6-0, 6-0). Whew, did we lose our groundstrokes for awhile at #2 doubles before righting the ship for a strong finish. They won the first set 6-2 and then the rhythm of both of their swings disappeared. But once again, when their back was against the wall, just as they’ve done several times this year, they dug in and got right through it. Whew, did #3 doubles make it interesting by getting down 1-4 after winning the first set 6-0. They won that set 7-5, but whew! And yet, one more. At #2 singles, Lauren Zablocki came out strong also and took the first set 6-1, then stopped stepping into her shots. It took until the end of her set, tied at 6-6 going into a tiebreaker, for her to figure it out. Then she rolled through that tiebreaker, 7-2. Whew. Haley Lemp, like Piper, played a pretty solid game today, winning 6-1, 6-2. She had a very nice 2nd half of this season.
We looked Monday-rusty today, especially in that heat. I’m glad that for the most part, we all realized it, thought our way through it, and did what we had to do to get the win.
Looking for a solid practice tomorrow…once again in the heat. This is the last week of September, right?
